Jaipur was built by Maharaja jai Singh II, ruler of Amber and true Renaissance man. At the young age of 11, he so impressed Emperor Aurangzeb that he was awarded the title 'sawai'. Thereafter, all the jaipur rulers were given this title. In 1727 he and his Bengali architect, Vidhya Chakravarty, laid out of new city, capital of the Kachwaha clan, and centre of one of the tree most powerful and splendid states of Rajasthan.
Jaipur became capital of all Rajasthan in 1956. It is now a thriving centre with a population of about 1.5 million. The city has a laid-back atmosphere, and the historic 'pink city' remains intact, one of the architectural glories of the world.
The tourists can also enjoy the cool evenings during boating in the Ramgarh Lake. Go for a movie, camel ride, stroll in the beautifully laid gardens, tour a zoo or spend your time in shopping some exclusive memoirs of Jaipur. One can purchase the Rajasthani handlooms, bandhani, block Print, blankets and trinkets.
